Spring 2010 has been unusually cool year, even here in Las Vegas. May 31st was the first time our temperature got to 95 degrees or above (96 officially) this year. I am not complaining, it has been so nice to have windows open and the power bill stay low.
Laurie’s dad and her brother, Mike, visited in April. Laurie arranged for Mike to speak at the final Psi Chi club meeting for the school year. We had a fun time with them – the Shark Reef Aquarium, Le Rêve – a Cirque Du Soleil show, Rebecca’s swim meet, and the Joseph’s Coat was in full bloom glory – so we spent a lot of time sitting on the patio.
Memorial Day weekend we ventured north to visit Grandma and Grandpa Henderson in Bountiful. All of Kevin’s siblings and spouses were there, except for Dennis and Cindy. We had a great time helping Grandma in the yard – transplanting roses, planting petunias, etc. We had a fun indoor/outdoor picnic with everyone! Sunday, the Sorensens came to visit and afterwards we went to the cemetery to put flowers on graves and saw some of our relatives there. Monday, since the wait was too long to go to Timpanogas Cave, we hiked the “Y” in Provo before returning home.
It’s also been an unusual time in some ways for our family.
Rebecca swam for Legacy High during this, her freshman year. She kept besting her times and even discovered that she does quite well at the “fly”. She has been reading LOTS of book series – if we haven’t seen or heard from her in a while, she is somewhere reading. She has also been taking violin lessons and performed at her first informal recital!
Katie has been playing lacrosse and was getting quite good – her teammates call her “Beastie” because she’s not afraid of getting into the fray – however, she hyper-extended her knee in a pre-game warm up in April (just before grandpa and Mike arrived). The short of it is, she will have ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) surgery on June 10th to repair the damage. Needless to say, she is bummed about her long recovery period, but the prospect of snowboarding and playing sports next spring has motivated her to get it done as soon as possible. She went to an anti-prom the night of Senior Prom. She is completing her junior year at Legacy High and performed in the end of the year guitar concert.
Sam has been life guarding this spring’s swim season, not competing. He will officially graduate from Legacy High on June 8th – last day of classes, June 2nd! He attended Centennial High’s Senior Prom and has been playing at Lake Mead with friends. April and May saw two of his very close friends leave on missions to Zimbabwe and Guam Micronesia, so he spends a little more time at home now, but still gets out with friends. He sang in his last concert as part of the Legacy High Madrigals. He will lifeguard this summer.
Atkin was transferred out of the office in April to the Tirana 2nd Branch area. He is the District Leader and a trainer! He is thrilled to be out of the office and proselyting again. They also teach English and the result of a huge distribution of flyers is that they have 130 people taking English classes – some of them stay after to learn about the church.
Laurie finished her semester and found out she was accepted to the Marriage and Family Therapy program at UNLV – she starts in the fall! She also got a graduate assistantship job in the Office of Research Integrity and started on June 1st – this will be the first time in 14 years she’s working for a paycheck.
Kevin has had a few challenges with the garden this year – mourning doves eating the plants as soon as they come to the surface; transplants to avoid that problem not handling it and colder temperatures slowing everything down – so it looks like we will have a lot of tomatoes from our three plants, some carrots that survived the winter after being planted last fall and a couple of squash, that are blooming but no signs of fruit year – in other words, our sparsest year in the garden so far.
Summer promises some more adventures.
